Проповедь в день памяти св. княгини Ольги
Во имя Отца и Сына и Св. Духа.
Братья и сестры,
Сегодня память св. блаж. княгини Ольги. Она была бабкой св. Владимира, просветителя Руси. В ее время в Киеве уже были христиане, но немногочисленные, была и христианская церковь и священник. Св. Ольга уверовала во Христа. Она совершила путешествие в Константинополь и там приняла св. Крещение. После возвращения в Киев, св. Ольга насаждала христианство в своем отечестве, сколько могла, хотя она не имела в этом свободы, потому что ее сын, князь Святослав, отец св. Владимира, был убежденным язычником.
Летопись рассказывает, что св. Ольга убеждала Святослава принять крещение, но он отказался. Замечательно то, какой довод использовала Ольга, убеждая Святослава. Она так говорила ему: “Я познала Бога, сын мой, и радуюсь; если и ты познаешь — тоже станешь радоваться”.
В Боге источник мира и радости для человеческой души. Не познавший Бога не может радоваться. Вспомним песнь Божией Матери, которая поется за каждой утреней: «Величит душа моя Господа и возрадовася дух мой о Бозе Спасе моем, яко призре на смирение рабы Своея». Даже мысль о Боге производит в душе радость. Так говорится в псалме: «Помянух Бога и возвеселихся» (Пс.76:4).
Современный мир оставил Бога, и потому сейчас в мире совершенно нет радости. Много смеха, развлечений и удовольствий, но нет радости.
В тропаре св. Ольги говорится: «Крилами богоразумия вперивши твой ум, возлетела еси превыше видимыя твари, взыскавши Бога и Творца всяческих, и, Того обретши, паки рождение Крещением прияла еси…»
Т.е. св. Ольга, оставив все земное, взошла мыслью к Творцу всего и Богу, поискала и нашла Его.
Познать Бога не значит только допускать, что Он есть. Познать Бога – это значит сердцем стремиться к Нему, бояться Его и любить Его, стараться быть угодным Ему. В молитве «Отче наш» мы в одном из первых прошений молимся «Да будет воля Твоя», то есть научи нас жить по воле Твоей. Тот кто познал своего Творца, кто действительно уразумел, что он создание Божие, что он совсем недавно приведен в жизнь из небытия, поставлен в этом мире на короткий срок, и скоро должен будет уйти из него, тот не станет много беспокоиться ни о чем земном, а только о том, чтобы быть угодным перед своим Творцом и Господом.
Мы создания Божии по своему происхождению, но Господь наш по Своей великой любви к нам сделал нас Своими чадами и наследниками небесного Царства. Он называет Себя нашим Отцом, и как истинный Отец заботится о нас. «Щедр и милостив Господь, долготерпелив и многомилостив… якоже щедрит отец сыны, ущедри Господь боящихся Его».
Напротив, диавол не сотворил нас, не страдал за нас на кресте, и не сделал нам никакого добра. А мы покорно служим ему и всегда исполняем его волю, а волю Божию отвергаем.
Св. Василий Великий говорит о себе, что он больше всего в мире, больше даже адских мучений, боится того, чтобы не оказаться неблагодарным перед таким нашим благодетелем и Господом, чтобы не получилось так, что если он в чем-либо отступил от воли Божией, то он станет для диавола предметом похвалы перед Богом, чтобы не дать самим собой врагу и отступнику повод укорить Бога.
Вера почти ушла из окружающего нас мира. Человек неверующий в существование Бога, в то что есть в мире Высшее Существо, фактически воображает божеством самого себя, и исполнение своих желаний считает целью своего существования. Мы знаем, что сатана был первым, кто поставил себя наравне с Богом, возомнил себя богом. Дух неверия – это дух сатанинской гордыни, не признающей никого выше себя. Мир одержим духом гордыни, которая проявляется в неверии, в дерзком отрицании своего Создателя.
Напротив, вера в Бога неразлучна со смирением перед Ним. Как и Пресвятая Богородица говорит в Своей песни о Себе: «яко призре на смирение рабы Своея».
Сознаем ли мы, причисляющие себя к верующим в Бога, что значит, быть рабом Божиим. Раб не имеет своей воли, а всегда занят тем, чтобы угодить своему господину. Как же мы должны жить, чтобы быть угодными Богу? – Нужно хранить Православную веру и жить по заповедям Божиим.
Св. Апостол Павел в апостольском чтении, которое читалось сегодня, прекрасно изображает дух христианской жизни:
«Любовь да будет непритворна; отвращайтесь зла, прилепляйтесь к добру; будьте братолюбивы друг к другу с нежностью; в почтительности друг друга предупреждайте; в усердии не ослабевайте; духом пламенейте; Господу служите; утешайтесь надеждою; в скорби будьте терпеливы, в молитве постоянны; в нуждах святых принимайте участие; ревнуйте о странноприимстве. Благословляйте гонителей ваших; благословляйте, а не проклинайте» (Рим. 12).

Sermon on the day of St Olga, the princess of Rus
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Brothers and sisters,
Today is the memory of St. Olga, the princess of Kiev. She was the grandmother of St. Vladimir, Enlightener of Russia. In her time, there were already Christians in Kyiv, but not many, there was also a Christian church and a priest. St. Olga came to believe in Christ. She travelled to Constantinople and there she was baptised by the Patriarch of Constantinople. On returning to Kyiv, St. Olga planted Christianity in her homeland as much as she could, although she did not have freedom in this, because her son, Prince Svyatoslav, father of St. Vladimir, was a convinced pagan.
The Chronicle says that St. Olga urged Svyatoslav to be baptized, but he refused. It is remarkable what argument Olga used to convince Svyatoslav. She didn’t use logical arguments. She said to him thus: “My son, I came to know God, and I rejoice; if you also come to know Him, you will also rejoice.”
For the human soul God is the source of peace and joy. He who does not know God cannot experience joy. Let us remember the hymn of the Most holy Mother of God, which we sing at every matins: “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoiced in God my Saviour, For He has looked upon the lowliness of His handmaiden,” Even the thought of God produces joy in the heart. Thus it is said in the psalm: “I remembered God and I rejoiced” (Ps. 77:4).
The contemporary world has abandoned God, and therefore there is no joy in the world. There is lots of laughter, entertainment, and pleasure, but no joy.
In the troparion of St. Olga it is said: “Having furnished thy mind with wings of divine knowledge, thou didst rise far above visible creation; and seeking God, the Creator of all, and finding Him, thou didst receive rebirth through baptism…”
I.e., St. Olga, leaving everything earthly and visible below, ascended in thought to God and the Creator of everything. She sought God and found Him.
Coming to know God does not mean only admitting that He exists. To know God means to strive with your heart towards Him, to fear Him and love Him, to make an effort to be pleasing to Him. In the prayer “Our Father” we say in one of the first petitions “Thy will be done”, i.e., “may Thy will be fulfilled in us”, “teach us to live according to Thy will”. The one who came to know his Creator, who really understood that he is God’s creation, that he has just been brought to life from non-existence, was placed in this world for a short time, and will soon have to leave it, he will not worry too much about anything earthly, but only how to be pleasing to his Creator and Lord.
By our origin we are God’s creation, but our Lord, in His great love for us, made us His children and heirs of His heavenly Kingdom. God teaches us to call Him our Father, and like a true Father He takes care of us. “Compassionate and merciful is the Lord, long-suffering and plenteous in mercy … As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him” (Ps. 102).
On the contrary, the devil did not create us, he did not suffer for us on the cross, and did us no good. Nevertheless, we obediently serve him and always fulfill his will, while rejecting God’s will.
St. Basil the Great in one of his writings shared about himself, that he, more than anything in the world, more than even torments of hell, was afraid to appear ungrateful before such our benefactor and Lord, he was afraid that it could turn out that if he departs from God’s will in anything, then he will become for the devil an object of praise before God. St Basil was afraid that he might give the enemy a reason to reproach God.
Faith has almost disappeared from the world around us. A man who does not believe in God, who does not admit that there exists a Supreme Being, actually imagines himself to be a deity. Such a person considers the fulfillment of his desires to be the ultimate goal of his existence. We know that Satan was the first who imagined himself equal with God, imagined himself a god. The spirit of unbelief is the spirit of satanic pride that recognizes no one above oneself. The world is possessed by the spirit of pride, which manifests itself in disbelief, in brazen denial of its Creator.
On the contrary, faith in God is inseparable from humility before Him. As the Most Holy Theotokos says about Herself in Her song: “For He has looked upon the lowliness of His handmaiden.”
As for us, who reckon ourselves among the believers, do we realize what it means to be a servant of God. The servant has no will of his own, but is always concerned striving to please his master.
How should we live in order to please God? – We should keep the Orthodox faith and live in piety according to God’s commandments. The Holy Apostle Paul, in today’s epistle, speaks beautifully about the disposition we should develop as Christians:
“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honour giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse” (Rom. 12).
