Проповедь в неделю 27-ю по Пятидесятнице
Во имя Отца и Сына и Святого Духа.
В один из субботних дней Господь Иисус Христос, по своему обыкновению, вошел в синагогу и учил народ. Там находилась женщина, которая по действию бесовскому согнулась, и не могла выпрямиться. Возложив руки, Господь исцелил эту женщину, и она сразу же выпрямилась, впервые за 18 лет.
Когда весь народ радовался и прославлял Бога, начальник синагоги вознегодовал, что это исцеление совершилось в субботу. Он не осмелился ничего сказать Иисусу Христу, но вместо того набросился на народ. Он сказал им: «Есть шесть дней, в которые можно работать; а потому приходите и исцеляйтесь в них, а не в день субботний».
Какое странное требование! Как будто чудесные исцеления были чем-то обыденным, как повседневная работа, запрещенная в день субботнего покоя. Господь ответил ему: «Лицемер! Не отвязывает ли от стойла каждый из вас в субботу своего вола или осла и не ведет ли поить? А эту женщину, дочь Авраама, которая связана сатаной вот уже восемнадцать лет, разве не следовало освободить от этих уз в день субботний?».
Господь Иисус Христос назвал начальника синагоги «лицемером», очевидно, потому, что его ревность о Законе Божием не была искренней. Под видом попечения о субботе он скрывал свою зависть к Чудотворцу.
Будет уместно сегодня вспомнить о заповеди субботнего покоя, 4-й из Десяти Заповедей:
«Помни день субботний, чтобы святить его. Шесть дней работай и делай все дела твои, а день седьмой – суббота Господу, Богу твоему. В него не делай никакой работы…» (Исх. 20, 8–11)
Таким образом, согласно Библии, Господь из семи дней недели дал нам шесть дней для работы, и только один день Он оставил для Себя. В христианские времена воскресенье, день Воскресения Христова, вместо ветхозаветной субботы приобрело значение дня покоя.
В наши дни смысл этой заповеди: т. е. то, чтобы посвящать Богу один день недели, почти полностью утрачен.
Нужно признать, что и мы, православные христиане, виновны в нарушении этой заповеди. Дух неверия, господствующий в мире, оказывает свое влияние и на нас. Утрачено само понимание того, что наш долг как христиан – святить день Воскресения Христова и посвящать этот день Господу. Вместо этого день Господень стал для нас просто уик-энд.
Разумеется, воскресенье – это время отдыха и восстановления сил, время, которое мы проводим с семьей и друзьями, но в то же время не будем забывать о значении воскресенья как празднования Воскресения Христова, дня который мы посвящаем Господу.
Откуда такое пренебрежение этой заповедью? – Из-за того, что в душе нет чувства благодарности Богу. Посвящать Богу один день недели – знак души благодарной, чувствующей свою зависимость от Бога, сознающей, что все, что мы имеем, – это Божий дар. От такой настроенности родится желание отложить житейские заботы и прийти в храм в воскресенье, не просто по обычаю, но с теплым чувством благодарности нашему Творцу и Благодетелю.
Если мы называем себя «рабами Божиими», то не обязаны ли мы подчиняться Его заповедям? Иногда может показаться, что люди даже не считают заповеди Божии чем-то обязательным для себя, как будто они их не касаются. Однако на суде Божием нам придется давать ответ за все наши дела, согласны ли они с заповедями Божиими.
Женщина, склонившаяся к земле и не способная выпрямиться – это образ души, полностью погруженной в земные дела. Господь Иисус Христос сделал ее способной разогнуться и смотреть вверх. Пусть этот пример научит нас отлагать мирские заботы в воскресный день и приходить в храм для молитвы и благодарения.
В Великом Каноне преп. Андрея Критского, который читается в первую седмицу Великого поста, есть такой стих:
«Подражай, душа моя, женщине, согнувшейся к земле; приди и припади к ногам Иисуса, чтобы Он исправил тебя, и чтобы ты могла прямо ходить по пути Господнему».

Sermon on 27th Sunday after Pentecost
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
On one of the Sabbath days the Lord Jesus Christ entered a synagogue, and taught the people, as He was accustomed. In the synagogue there was a woman, who, due to a demonic action, was bent over, unable to straighten herself up. By laying on His hands the Lord healed this woman, and she immediately straightened herself up for the first time in 18 years.
While all the people rejoiced and glorified God, the ruler of the synagogue was indignant because the healing took place on the Sabbath. He didn’t dare to say anything to Jesus Christ, but lashed out at people. He said to the crowd: “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.”
What a strange claim! As if the miraculous healings were something normal, like ordinary work, which is forbidden on the Sabbath.
The Lord answered him: “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound, lo, for these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?”
He named the ruler of the synagogue ‘hypocrite’, apparently, because his zeal for the Law was not sincere. Behind his concern for the Sabbath he was hiding his jealousy of the Miracle worker.
It is appropriate to say a few words about the commandment of the Sabbath, which is the 4th of the Ten Commandments:
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work…” (Ex 20, 8-11)
Thus, according to the Bible the Lord gave us 6 days of the week for work, and one day he reserved for Himself. In Christian times Sunday, the day of Christ’s Resurrection, replaced the Old-Testament Sabbath (Saturday) as the day of rest.
In our days, the meaning of this commandment, i.e. to dedicate one day of the week to God, has been almost completely lost. We must admit that even we, Orthodox Christians, are guilty in regard to this commandment. The spirit of unbelief, that reigns in the world, affects us as well. The very understanding, that it is our duty as Christians to keep holy the day of Christ’s Resurrection and to dedicate this day to the Lord, has been lost. Instead, the Lord’s day became for us just a weekend.
Certainly, Sundays are time to rest, recuperate and spend time with family and friends, but at the same time we must not forget the meaning of Sunday as the day of Christ’s Resurrection, the day we offer to the Lord.
What is the source of this neglect of God’s commandment of the Sabbath day? – We may suggest that its source is ingratitude to God. Dedicating one day of the week to God is a sign of a grateful soul that feels its dependence on God, knowing that all it has is God’s gift. From this a desire will arise to put aside worldly cares and come to church on Sunday, not out of custom, but with a warm feeling of gratitude to our Creator and Benefactor.
If we call ourselves ‘servants of God’, shouldn’t we submit to God’s commandments? Sometimes it appears that people don’t even feel obligated to keep the commandments, as if they don’t concern them. However, at God’s judgement, we will have to give an account for all our deeds, whether they agree with God’s commandments.
The woman bent over to earth and unable to raise herself up is a symbol of a soul that is completely immersed in earthly affairs and unable to think of anything spiritual. The Lord Jesus Christ rendered her capable to straighten herself up and look upward.
May this example inspire us to leave behind all worldly cares and come to church on Sundays for prayer and thanksgiving.
In the Great Canon of St Andrew of Crete, which is read during the first week of Lent, there is such verse:
“Imitate my soul the woman bent earthward; come and fall down at the feet of Jesus, that he may straighten you to walk upright in the footsteps of the Lord”.
