Братья и сестры,
В священном Писании мы находим ряд признаков конца земного мира. По этим признакам христиане, которые будут жить в то время, смогут понять, что конец уже близок. Для того и даны эти указания, чтобы «не прельстился никто из избранных» (Мф. 24,24).
Мы часто говорим, что в настоящее время многие признаки конца уже сбылись или сбываются на наших глазах. Один из таких признаков, по слову Самого Господа, это крайний упадок веры в Него. Господь так говорит об этом: «Сын Человеческий, когда придет, найдет ли веру на земле?» (Лк. 18,8). И уже сейчас мы видим вокруг себя быстрое умножение неверия.
Какая же причина того, что вера во Христа уходит из мира?
Источник неверия в душе – это гордость. Гордыня человеческого ума, вообразившего, что он может все понять и объяснить. Гордыня учености, которая ставит во главу угла научное исследование. Сейчас все оценивается, измеряется наукой, которая объявлена критерием истинности. В действительности, рамки научного исследования очень узки. Например, что может сказать наука на вопрос о смысле жизни? Совершенно ничего. Самые важные, насущные вопросы нашей жизни лежат совершенно вне компетенции естественных наук.
Чтобы познать Бога и уверовать в Него, современный человек должен прежде всего вспомнить свою немощность и смириться.
«Начало премудрости – страх Господень» говорит книга Притчей (Притч. 1, 7). Подлинная вера в Бога проявляется в благоговейном страхе перед Ним, истинным центром бытия, источником жизни, несозданным, вечно существующем. Он – всесильный Создатель, а мы – Его создания. Он – Царь, а мы – Его рабы, обязанные во всем исполнять Его волю. Все церковные службы мы начинаем с этого исповедания: «Царю небесный…», «Приидите, поклонимся Цареви нашему, Богу…». Он ввел нас в эту жизнь на короткий срок, после чего нам нужно будет оставить ее в установленное Богом время.
Современному человеку трудно принять это. В своей гордости человек вообразил самого себя центром вселенной. От неверия происходит крайний эгоизм, когда человек почитает себя самого целью, а других средством. Когда каждый считает исполнение своих желаний целью своего существования и непреложным законом.
Св. Апостол Павел в послании Тимофею так описывает нравственное состояние человечества в последние времена. «Знай же, что в последние дни наступят времена тяжкие. Ибо люди будут самолюбивы, сребролюбивы, горды, надменны, злоречивы, родителям непокорны, неблагодарны, нечестивы, недружелюбны, непримирительны, клеветники, невоздержны, жестоки, не любящие добра, предатели, наглы, напыщенны, более сластолюбивы, нежели боголюбивы…» (2Тим. 3, 1–5).
Все эти пороки, перечисленные св. Апостолом, происходят прежде всего от неверия. У преп. старца Амвросия Оптинского была такая поговорка: «Отчего человек бывает плох? Оттого, что забывает, что над ним Бог».
Будем стараться укреплять в себе веру, жить по вере. Только тогда мы сможем передать веру во Христа молодому поколению.
Хочу поделиться воспоминанием из своего детства. Однажды мы пришли в гости к одному благочестивому пожилому священнику. Он кончал свой обед, и мы расположились в другом конце комнаты, не желая его беспокоить. Окончив обед, священник прочитал краткую молитву и сделал несколько поклонов. Во всем этом не было ничего необыкновенного, но на меня, еще ребенка, его краткая молитва произвела незабываемое впечатление. Мы часто читаем молитву после еды лишь по привычке, формально, но тут у меня создалось ясное ощущение, что этот священник обращается к Кому-то невидимому и с благоговением, страхом и любовью благодарит Его.
Так же как пороки заразительны, и легко передаются от одного к другому, так же и добродетели передаются другим. Преп. Дорофей Газский приводит такое наставление древнего отца. На вопрос одного монаха, как стяжать страх Божий, тот ответил: «пойди, и поселись с человеком, имеющим страх Божий. И тем, что он имеет страх Божий, он научит и тебя приобрести страх Божий».
В мире, где вера в Бога становится все более редким явлением, в этой духовной пустыне, нам предстоит трудный подвиг сохранить в себе теплоту веры и передать ее нашим детям и внукам.
В этом главнейшая задача нашей жизни.

Brothers and sisters,
In the Holy Scripture we find a number of signs of the end of the visible world. By these signs, Christians who will live at that time will be able to understand that the end is near. That is why these instructions are given, so that “none of the elect will be deceived” (Matthew 24:24).
We often say that in our days many signs of the end have already come true or are coming true before our eyes. One of these signs, according to the word of our Lord Himself, is an extreme decline in faith in Him. The Lord speaks about it this way: “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8). And even now we see around us a rapid increase in unbelief.
What is the reason that faith in Christ is leaving the world?
The source of unbelief in the soul is pride. The pride of the human mind, which imagines that it can understand and explain everything. The pride of science, which puts scientific research at the forefront. Everything is evaluated, measured by science, which is declared the top criterion of truth. In fact, the scope of scientific research is very narrow. For example, what can science say to the question of the meaning of life? Absolutely nothing. The most important, pressing questions of our life lie completely outside the competence of the natural sciences.
In order to know God and believe in Him, contemporary man must first of all humble himself and acknowledge his weakness.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”, says the book of Proverbs (Proverbs 1:7). True faith in God is manifested in humble fear of Him, Who is the source of our existence, an uncreated, eternal Being. He is the Almighty Creator, and we are His creations. He is the King, and we are His servants, bound to do His will in all things. We start all church services with this confession: “O Heavenly King…”, “O come, let us worship God, our King …”. He has brought us into this life for a short period of time, after which we will need to leave it at the time set by God.
It is difficult for a modern person to accept this. In his pride, man imagined himself to be the centre of the universe. From unbelief comes extreme egoism, when a person considers himself an end, and others a means. When each individual considers the fulfillment of his desires to be the purpose of his existence and an immutable law.
The Holy Apostle Paul in his epistle to Timothy describes the moral state of mankind in the last times: “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, insolent, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power” (2Tim. 3:1-5).
All these vices, enumerated by the Holy Apostle, grow primarily from unbelief. Holy Elder Ambrose of Optina had the following saying: “Why does a man become bad? Because he forgets that there is God above him.”
Let us strive to strengthen our faith and live by faith. Only then will we be able to pass on faith in Christ to the younger generation.
I want to share a memory from my childhood. One day we came to visit a pious elderly priest. He was finishing his lunch, and we settled down at the other end of the room, not wishing to disturb him. After finishing his meal, the priest read a short prayer and made a few bows. There was nothing extraordinary about all this, but for me, still a child, his brief prayer made an unforgettable impression. We often say the prayer after meals only out of habit, formally, but while observing this priest I had a clear feeling that he was speaking to Someone invisible and thanking Him with reverence, fear, and love.
Just as vices are contagious, and are easily transmitted from one to another, so virtues can be transmitted to others. St. Dorotheus of Gaza cites the following instruction of an ancient father. When asked by a monk how to acquire the fear of God, he replied: “Go and dwell with a man who has the fear of God. And by the fact that he has the fear of God, he will teach you also to acquire the fear of God.”
In a world where faith in God is becoming increasingly rare, in this spiritual desert, we have a difficult feat to keep the fervour of faith and pass it on to our children and grandchildren.
This is the most important task of our life.
