Во имя Отца и Сына и Св. Духа.
Мы совершаем память Новомучеников и Исповедников Российских. Это дорогой для нас праздник, потому что Новомученики близки к нам и по времени, и также тем, что мы, можно с дерзновением сказать, являемся продолжателями их борьбы за чистоту и истину в Церкви.
Новомученики также близки нам и потому, что они были обыкновенные люди, как каждый из нас. Были, конечно, среди них и святые подвижники, и старцы и ученые богословы. Но большая часть из них были обыкновенными, ничем не выделяющимися людьми.
Так могло казаться. Но когда наступил час испытания их веры, в критический момент они показали себя героями. Так бывало и в древней Церкви, например, св. Вонифатий, который был грешным человеком, но в один час он возвысился до мученичества и святости.
Но тогда, сто лет назад, не все становились исповедниками. Были и такие, кто отрекался от веры. Были и священники, которые становились безбожниками и учителями атеизма.
Одни пали, а другие просияли своими подвигами веры, мужества и терпения.
Вот пример: о. Алексей Ставровский был уже немолодым протоиереем в Санкт-Петербурге. Он не отличался каким-то особым благочестием; о нем, например, говорится, что он любил провести время за игрой в карты. В 1918 г. большевики арестовали его вместе с другими многими. Для устрашения коммунисты решили расстрелять каждого десятого. Они выстроили заложников и стали отсчитывать. Счёт пришёлся на молодого священника, который стоял рядом с о. Алексеем. Тогда о. Алексей сказал ему: «Я уже старый, мне все равно скоро умирать – вставай на мое место, а я на твоё». Так он положил душу свою за ближнего.
В критический момент раскрылось духовное богатство, которое он хранил в своём сердце и которое прежде, может быть, не было заметно даже ему самому.
Мы тоже сейчас вступили в критическое время, апокалиптическое время. Это не значит, что конец мира наступит очень скоро. Время конца нам не открыто. Но настоящие события, несомненно, апокалиптические. Посмотрите хотя бы на глобальный характер этих событий, а это указывает на приближение всемирного правителя – антихриста.
К сожалению, многие не хотят видеть этого и продолжают жить так, как прежде, не думая о спасении души, о покаянии. Нам нужно начать серьезнее относиться к своей жизни и своей вере. Иначе как мы сможем устоять в тех испытаниях, которые должны прийти?
В кондаке Великого канона есть такие слова, всем известные: «Душе моя, душе моя, восстани, что спиши». Нужно нам всем проснуться от греховного сна для жизни по воле Божией.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
We celebrate the memory of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. This feast is dear for us because the New Martyrs are close to us both in time, and also in the fact that we, as we dare to believe, are their followers in their struggle for purity and truth in the Church.
The New Martyrs are also close to us because they were ordinary people, like each of us. There were, of course, among them holy ascetics, clairvoyant elders, and theologians. But most of them were ordinary people.
It might appear so. But when a critical moment came that put their faith on trial, they proved themselves heroes. It happened similarly in the ancient Church as well, for example, St. Boniface, who was a sinful man, but in one hour he ascended to martyrdom and holiness.
At that time, a hundred years ago, not everyone became confessors. There were many who renounced their faith. There were also priests who became atheists and even teachers of atheism.
Some fell, while others shone forth with their feats of faith, courage, and patience.
Here’s an example: Fr. Alexei Stavrovsky was already an elderly archpriest in St. Petersburg. He was not distinguished by any particular piety; for example, it is said about him that he liked to spend time playing cards. In 1918 the Bolsheviks arrested him along with many others. With the purpose of intimidation the communists decided to execute every tenth among the prisoners. They lined them up and began to count. The tenth count fell on a young priest who stood next to Fr. Alexei. Then Fr. Alexei told him: “I am already old, I will die soon anyway – get up in my place, and I in yours.” Thus, he laid down his life for his neighbour.
At a critical moment, a spiritual treasure that he kept in his heart was revealed, which, perhaps, was not noticeable before even to himself.
We, too, have now entered a critical time, an apocalyptic time. This does not mean that the end of the world will come very soon. The time of the end is not revealed to us. But the events that are unfolding before our eyes are undoubtedly apocalyptic. Just look at the global nature of these events, it indicates nearness of the global ruler – the antichrist.
Unfortunately, many are not willing to see this. They continue to live as before, not thinking about salvation of their souls, about repentance. We need to start taking our lives and our faith more seriously. Otherwise, how will we be able to withstand the trials that are to come?
In the kontakion of the Great Canon there are such words, well-known to all: “My soul, O my soul, rise up! Why art thou sleeping?”
We all need to wake up from slumber of sin and to live according to the will of God.
