О СТРАХЕ СМЕРТИ
Христос Воскресе!
Cейчас, когда мир охватила пандемия страха смерти, благовременно нам вспомнить, что Господь наш победитель смерти и «начаток нашего Воскресения» (1 Кор. 15,23) .
Страху смерти не должно быть места в сердце христианина. Господь наш Владыка жизни и смерти. Души всех всегда содержатся в Его руке. Как же может кто-либо умереть, если нет на это воли Божией? Хотя в обыденной речи и употребляются такие выражения, как “случайная смерть” или “преждевременная смерть”, но для христианина это бессмыслица.
Человеческая жизнь – это постоянный таинственный диалог между Богом и человеком. До тех пор пока этот диалог продолжается, пока человек поддерживает этот диалог, Господь не оборвёт безвременно его жизнь. Только если человек перестаёт слышать голос Божий в своей душе, если его жизнь превращается в бессмысленное накопление грехов, Бог может положить предел бесплодной жизни. Важно понять, что смерть это таинство. Промысл Божий определяет время смерти каждого Своим неисповедимым судом.
В новостях мы находим, что иногда даже очень пожилые люди выздоравливают после заражения коронавирусом, а напротив, молодые и здоровые становятся жертвой болезни. Почему так происходит? Конечно, медики, вероятно, дали бы объяснение таким случаям, но наилучшее объяснение мы находим в евангельской притче о бесплодной смоковнице.
«Некто имел в винограднике своём посаженную смоковницу, и пришёл искать плода на ней, и не нашёл. И сказал виноградарю: вот, я третий год прихожу искать плода на этой смоковнице, и не нахожу; сруби её: на что она и землю занимает? Но он сказал ему в ответ: господин! оставь её и на этот год, пока я окопаю её и обложу навозом, – не принесёт ли плода; если же нет, то в следующий год срубишь её» (Лк. 13: 6-9).
Здесь виноградарь олицетворяет Божие милосердие. Господь по своему милосердию продлевает дни нашей жизни, ожидая нашего покаяния и обращения. Таким образом, продолжительность нашей жизни зависит прежде всего от нашего духовного состояния, от того, насколько мы готовы к переселению в вечность. Господь все устраивает в нашей жизни для того, чтобы мы духовно развивались, чтобы мы приблизились к Нему путем покаяния. Предадим сами себя, друг друга и всю нашу жизнь в руки благого и премудрого Промысла Божия.
Преп. Антоний Оптинский написал для одной своей духовной дочери такую молитву:
«В руки Твоего превеликого милосердия, о, Боже мой, вручаю душу мою и многоболезненное тело, и всех моих близких. Ты будь помощником моим и покровителем во всей жизни моей, во исходе моем и по кончине. И во всем: как в радости и печали, в счастье и несчастье, в болезни и здоровье, в жизни и смерти, – во всем да будет с нами воля Твоя святая, яко на небеси и на земли. Аминь».

Christ is risen!
Now, when the world is in a grip of pandemic of fear of death, it’s timely for us to remember that our Lord is a Conqueror of death and the “firstfruits of our Resurrection” (1 Cor. 15,23)
There should be no room for fear of death in the heart of a Christian. Our Lord is Master of life and death. Every soul is always held in His hand. Consequently, how can anyone die without His will? Although in everyday conversation expressions such as “accidental death” or “premature death” are heard, for a Christian they are meaningless.
Human life is a continuous and mysterious dialogue between God and a human being. As long as this dialogue continues: as long as that person sustains this dialogue, the Lord will not terminate his life before time. It’s only if the person ceases to listen to God’s voice in his soul: if his life turns into a meaningless accumulation of sins, God may place a limit to a fruitless life. It’s important to understand that death is a mystery. God’s Providence determines the time of death of every human by His unfathomable judgement.
We find in the news that sometimes very old people recover after being infected with coronavirus, and conversely, the young and healthy individuals become victims to this virus. Why is it so? Of course, the medical fraternity will likely give you reasons about these instances, but we can find the best explanation in the Gospel parable of the barren fig tree:
“A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard: ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down: why does it use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him: ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilise it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down”. (Luke 13:6-9).
Here, the keeper of the vineyard personifies God’s mercy. Through His mercy, the Lord extends the days of our life, expecting our repentance and conversion. Thus, before all else, the continuity of our life depends upon our preparedness to transfer into eternity. The Lord arranges everything in our lives so that we may be able to develop spiritually; so that we may come closer to Him through the path of repentance. Let us commit ourselves and one another and our whole lives into the hands of the good and all-wise Providence of God.
Holy Elder Anthony of Optina wrote the following prayer to one of his spiritual daughters:
“Into your hands of vast mercy, O my God, I entrust my soul and my much ailing body, and all my dear ones. Be my helper and protector throughout my life: in my departure and my demise. And in everything: like in joy and sorrow, in happiness and misfortune, in sickness and in health, in life and death – in everything that will befall us, be your Holy Will in Heaven and on earth. Amen”.
