В день праздника Богоявления читается апостольское чтение из послания Св. Ап. Павла к Титу, в котором говорится о двух явлениях Господа Иисуса Христа: первом Его пришествии для спасения людей и Его втором страшном пришествии для суда.
«Ибо явилась благодать Божия, спасительная для всех человеков, научающая нас, чтобы мы, отвергнув нечестие и мирские похоти, целомудренно, праведно и благочестиво жили в нынешнем веке, ожидая блаженного упования и явления славы Великого Бога и Спасителя нашего Иисуса Христа» (Тит 2:11-13).
«Ибо явилась благодать Божия» – Апостол называет пришествие Христово явлением благодати, потому что, благодаря Его пришествию, величайшая благодать излилась на человеческий род.
«И от полноты Его все мы приняли и благодать на благодать» (Иоан. 1,16).
Мы получили прощение грехов, освящение, мы «стали своими Богу» (Еф. 2,19), стали чадами Божиими. Мы познали Бога, получили Евангельские заповеди, следуя которым мы можем достигать богоподобия. Мы соделались «причастниками Божественного естества» (2 Петр. 1,4).
Мы вооружились для борьбы с нашими невидимыми врагами, которые прежде, благодаря своему коварству, победили нас и поработили своему темному царству. Теперь же мы научились бороться с нашим врагом и побеждать его, потому что мы теперь не сами боремся, а Сам Бог невидимо помогает нам и в нас побеждает. Мы получили дар Духа Святого, который также называется благодатью.
Бог – приснотекущий неисточаемый источник всякого блага. Он с великой щедростью всем ниспосылает Свои дары, но Он не расточает их бесполезно. Бог щедр, но Он желает, чтобы ничего не пропало из Его даров. Вспомним, как после насыщения пятью хлебами пяти тысяч человек, Господь приказал собрать все куски, чтобы ничего не пропало.
Бог потребует от нас отчета за те духовные дарования, которые Он нам дал. Св. Апостол Павел пишет к Коринфянам: «Умоляем вас, чтобы благодать Божия не тщетно была принята вами» (2 Кор. 6,1).
Бог требует, чтобы Его дары были нами преумножены. В притче о талантах Господь говорит Своим рабам, которым Он передал серебро: «употребляйте их в оборот, пока я возвращусь» (Лука 19,13). Раб, не преумноживший серебра Господина своего, был осужден как расточитель господского имущества. «Кто не собирает со Мною, расточает», (Матф. 12,30) – говорит Господь.
Как же можем мы умножить принятую нами благодать? Божии дары умножаются тогда, когда мы обращаем их на служение нашим ближним. Для умножения духовного дарования требуется жертвенность. В жизни Церкви все держится на жертвенности. А жертвенность происходит от любви. Ничто иное как любовь побуждает человека к жертвенности, к бескорыстным трудам, к готовности послужить Церкви.
Господь Иисус Христос так говорит о временах перед Его пришествием: «По причине умножения беззакония, во многих охладеет любовь» (Матф. 24,12). И сейчас мы можем видеть, что любовь охладела и оттого умалилась жертвенность. Оттого наша церковная жизнь пришла в такое жалкое положение.
Послушаем наставление о любви Св. Феофана Затворника: «Любовь христианская, рождающаяся из самоотвержения, других поставляет целию, а себя считает средством; так и действует … Как в живом организме ни один орган не занят собою, а делает лишь то, что нужно для других, так и в обществе, когда всякий будет заботиться о благе других, будет органическое живое всех сочетание, где каждый заботится о всех и все о каждом».

Brothers and sisters,
On the Feast Day of Theophany, holy Apostle Paul’s Epistle to Titus is read in which there is mention of two appearances of our Lord Jesus Christ: the first speaks of His advent in order to save Mankind and the second coming, for His frightening judgment.
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:11-13).
“For the grace of God has appeared” – the Apostle calls Christ’s coming as the ‘appearance of grace’ because due to His arrival, immense grace was poured out over the human race.
“And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.” (John 1:16).
We received forgiveness of our sins, sanctification – we became “members of God’s household” (Eph. 2,19); we became God’s children. We came to know God, we received the Gospels commandments, following which we can achieve the likeness of God. We became “partakers of the Divine nature” (2 Peter 1,4).
We armed ourselves for battle with our invisible enemies, who formerly defeated us due to their craftiness, and enslaved us to their dark kingdom. Now, we have learned to encounter our enemy and vanquish him because at this point, it’s not us alone that do battle but God Himself, invisibly helps us and conquers within us. We have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is also called grace.
God is an abounding and inexhaustible source of all good things. While He sends all His gifts with great generosity, He doesn’t squander them unproductively. God is generous, but He doesn’t want any of His gifts to go to waste. Remember after our Lord fed 5 thousand people with 5 loaves of bread, He directed that all the leftovers be collected so that nothing would go to waste.
God will demand from us an account for all those spiritual gifts that He gave us. In his Epistle to the Corinthians, holy Apostle Paul writes: “We also beseech that you receive not the grace of God in vain:” (2 Cor. 6:1).
God requires us to increase His gifts. In the parable on minas (talents), the Master addressed the servants who received the talents: “Do business till I come.” (Luke 19:13). The servant that didn’t increase the lord’s money was judged as a squanderer of the lord’s property. Christ says: “He who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” (Mat. 12:30).
How do we multiply the grace that was given to us? God’s gifts are multiplied when we direct them toward serving our neighbour. An increase in grace demands sacrifice. In the life of the Church everything is bound by sacrifice; and sacrifice comes from love. Nothing other than love can motivate a person toward being sacrificial: toward selfless efforts: toward a willingness to serve the Church.
Our Lord Jesus Christ speaks of the times before His Coming: “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” (Mat. 24:12). And now we can see that love has grown cold, and as a consequence, sacrifices have diminished. This is why our church life is in such a pathetic state.
Let us listen to the instruction by Saint Theophan the Recluse: “Christian love is born from self-denial, placing others as its aim, and regarding self as the means; and thus it acts… Just like in a living organism, not one organ is engaged with itself, but does that which is necessary for others; so it is in a society, when everybody takes care of the welfare of others, there will be a live and organic union where each one is concerned about all, and all are concerned about each one.”
