Во имя Отца и Сына и Св. Духа.
«Поминайте наставников ваших, которые проповедовали вам слово Божие, и, взирая на кончину их жизни, подражайте вере их» (Евр. 13,7).
Св. Церковь, провожая усопших в последний путь, не только молится о оставлении их грехов, но и прославляет их, как «подвизавшихся подвигом добрым, окончивших своё течение и веру сохранивших» (2 Тим. 4,7). Таково значение надгробных песнопений, которые мы только что совершили, прощаясь с нашим дорогим о. Михаилом.
За три дня до кончины над ним было совершено таинство соборования, после которого, хотя ему было трудно говорить, состоялась краткая беседа с ним. Когда мы пожелали ему скорее выздороветь и вернуться к служению, он отвечал: «Как будет воля Божия».
Воля Божия была взять от нас о. Михаила.
Церковь в Св. Писании уподобляется винограднику или саду. Садовник, когда видит, что плод уже созрел, тотчас же снимает его, не ожидая более ни одного дня. Так и Господь принимает душу в небесную житницу, когда человек духовно созреет, когда душа его достигнет возможного для него усовершенствования и принесёт духовный плод.
Преп. Амвросий Оптинский говорит, что когда человек готов к переселению в будущую жизнь, то Господь берет его, даже несмотря на то, что он крайне нужен Церкви. Как пример он приводит св. Василия Великого, умершего в нестаром возрасте, хотя он стоял во главе борьбы православия с арианством, и его потеря для Церкви была невосполнима.
В последний год о. Михаил, несмотря на свой возраст, совершал здесь, в храме Казанской иконы Богородицы, все службы церковного круга. Восстанавливалась здоровая приходская жизнь после смутного, тяжелого периода. Его скоропостижная кончина – великая потеря для его семьи, для наших приходов в Сиднее, для всей нашей епархии.
После соборования о. Михаил вспоминал, как он стал священником. Он прежде не думал о принятии священного сана и не готовился к тому. Его участие в церковной жизни сводилось, в основном, к преподаванию в церковно-приходской школе.
Тогда, почти полвека назад Владыка Савва обратился к нему с просьбой принять рукоположение. «Нужно служить, потому что некому» – как сказал Владыка. И о. Михаил увидел в словах Владыки волю Божию и согласился.
«Пою Богу моему дондеже есмь» (Пс. 145,2) – эти слова псалма исполнились в жизни о. Михаила. Уже в предсмертной болезни, видя, что силы его уходят, он и не помышлял о том, чтобы оставить служение Церкви. Напротив, он обдумывал, как он сможет служить в своём болезненном состоянии. Он докладывал мне, как своему епископу, что он сможет продолжать своё служение, хотя ему придётся сидеть в алтаре во время службы.
Очевидно, слова вл. Саввы, давшие стимул началу его священнослужения, давали ему энергию даже тогда, когда его физические силы уже изнемогли: «Нужно служить, потому что некому».
Воин, который, будучи ранен, не оставляет своего места в строю, почитается как герой.
О. Михаил был человеком сильной воли, который подчиняет своей воле все вокруг себя. Эта его черта проявилась в критический момент, когда произошло соединение Русской Зарубежной Церкви с Московской Патриархией. Мы знаем, что многие из священников не были согласны с объединением, но когда оно совершилось, очень немногие нашли в себе внутреннюю силу оставить своих епископов, оставить свои любимые храмы. Среди этих немногих был и о. Михаил.
Но совершенно уникальным было то, что о. Михаил ушёл не с малой группой прихожан, как это обычно происходило в других местах, а весь приход последовал за ним. Так что храм оставлен был ими пустым, как тело оставленное душой.
На примере о. Михаила мы можем видеть, как плодотворна может быть воля одного человека, если она направлена к богоугождению.
Сейчас, прощаясь с нашим дорогим о. Михаилом, мы молимся о упокоении его души, и просим его предстательства о нас, чтобы молитвами покойных пастырей: о. Иоанна и о. Михаила умирилась их паства в Австралии.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
“Remember your leaders who have spoken God’s word to you. As you observe the outcome of their lives, imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7).
In farewelling the departed on their final path, the Holy Church not only prays for the remission of their sins, but also lauds them as those, who “have fought the good fight, have finished the race, have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:7). Thus was the meaning of our singing, which we have just concluded in saying goodbye with our dear Father Michael.
Three days before his repose, he received Holy Unction after which – even though it was difficult for him to speak, we had a short conversation. When we wished him a speedy recovery and return to serving in the church, he responded: “God’s will be done.”
And God’s will was to have Father Michael taken away from us.
The Church in the Holy Gospel is likened to a vineyard or garden. When the gardener sees that a fruit has ripened, he harvests it without waiting even for one more day. Likewise, the Lord receives a soul into the Heavenly storehouses when a person has ripened spiritually; when the soul attains its possible perfection and brings forth a spiritual fruit.
Holy elder Ambrose of Optina states that when a person is ready to resettle into eternal life, the Lord takes him even if he is extremely needed by the Church. As an example, he presents Saint Basil the Great, who died at a relatively young age, even though he headed the Orthodox battle with Arianism and his loss was irreplaceable to the Church.
Despite his age, Father Michael’s final year saw him perform all the Divine Services of the church cycle at the church of the Mother of God Icon of Kazan. During this period, a healthy parish life was being re-established after a very turbulent and difficult period. His very quick passing is a great loss to his family, to our parishes in Sydney, and indeed for the entire Diocese.
After receiving Holy Unction, Father Michael recalled how he became a priest. Initially, he had no intention of being ordained as a priest, and was not preparing himself for this. His participation in church life was to basically teach in the parish school.
Then – nearly half a century ago, Vladyka Sabba turned to him with a request that he be ordained as a priest because, as Vladika said, “There is nobody to serve.” Seeing God’s will in Vladyka’s words, Father Michael agreed.
“I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.” (Psalm 146:2). – these words were fulfilled in Father Michael’s life.
Realising that his strength was ebbing, and even in his terminal illness, he never had any thoughts of ceasing his service to the Church. On the contrary – he was pondering as to how he could continue serving in his ailing situation. He reported to me, as his Bishop, that he will be able to continue serving, although he would be forced to sit in the altar during the service.
Apparently, Vladyka Sabba’s words, which gave an incentive to the beginning of his ministry, were inspiring him even when his physical strength was already exhausted: “You need to serve, because there is no one else”.
A warrior that doesn’t leave his post despite being wounded is regarded as a hero.
Father Michael was a man of strong will, who subjugated everyone around him with his will. This characteristic came to the fore during a very critical moment – when unification took place between the Russian Church Abroad and the Moscow Patriarchate. We know that although many priests didn’t agree with this unification, when it did happen, there were very few that found inner strength to forsake their Bishops and leave their beloved churches. Among the few was Father Michael.
The uniqueness of this act was that Father Michael didn’t leave with a small number of parishioners, which was the usual case in other instances, but with the entire parish, so that the church was left empty – like a body without a soul.
The example that we see in Father Michael is how the will of one person can be so fruitful if it’s applied to please God.
And now, in parting with our dear Father Michael, we pray for the repose of his soul, and ask for his intercession for us so that the prayers of the deceased pastors: Father John and Father Michael will create peace among their flock in Australia.
