Проповедь перед закладкой храма св. Феогния
Во имя Отца и Сына и Св. Духа.
Братья и сёстры, мы сейчас совершим чин закладки монастырского храма Св. Феогния.
Господь говорит ученикам на Тайной Вечери «Без Меня вы не можете делать ничего» (Иоан. 15,5). Если всякое дело мы начинаем молитвой, то тем более такое важное и богоугодное дело как постройка храма начинается с особого богослужения: «чина основания храма и водружения креста». Мы будем просить Божией помощи строителям, чтобы их работа шла успешно и беспрепятственно со стороны видимых и невидимых врагов.
Ни на что так не ополчается диавол, как на строительство храмов. Мы знаем, что немало было примеров, когда в приходе при строительстве храма происходили глубокие нестроения. Один из таких примеров – строительство собора Всех Скорбящих Радости в Сан-Франциско в начале 60-х годов. Дошло до того, что члены приходского совета начали судебное дело против прихода, из-за чего строительство собора было приостановлено судебным решением.
В такой критической ситуации Владыка Иоанн Максимович был спешно вызван из Европы и переведен на Сан-Францисскую кафедру.
Свят. Иоанн перенёс много скорбей из-за постройки собора. Его самого обвинили в финансовых нарушениях и вызывали в суд как обвиняемого. Но он своим терпением, кротостью и молитвой смог победить это диавольское наваждение. Мир в приходе был восстановлен и строительство собора завершено.
Когда Вл. Иоанна спросили: кто виноват в происшедшем конфликте? Он ответил одним словом: «диавол». Мы не должны ничего бояться, но нужно быть готовыми к разным непредвиденным трудностям.
Знаменательно то, что сегодня совместно с празднованием воскресного дня мы совершаем память Св. Иоанна Шанхайского и Сан-Францисского. Духовная сила происходит от терпения и опыта, поэтому святые получают благодать помогать в тех искушениях и трудностях, с которыми они боролись во время своей жизни. Сами претерпев искушение, они могут помогать искушаемым (Евр. 2,18).
Например, те святые, которые претерпевали усиленную брань с духом блуда, помогают страдающим от нападений плотской страсти.
Поэтому для нас утешительно, что начало строительства нашего храма совпало с праздником Св. Иоанна Шанхайского, который перенёс много скорбей за своё храмоздательство.
Молитвами святителей Феогния и Иоанна да поможет нам Господь! Аминь.
Sermon before the Rite of the Founding of the Church of St Theognios
In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Brothers and sisters,
We are now going to perform the rite for the laying of a building foundation for a monastery church in honour of Saint Theognios.
At the Last Supper the Lord says to His disciples: “…for without Me you can do nothing”. (John 15:5). If we begin our everyday activities with a prayer, then how much more such an important and God-pleasing endeavour as the construction of a church should be begun with a special Church Service: “Rite of the founding of a church and the erection of the cross”. We will be asking God’s help for the builders, so that their work will be performed successfully and unhindered from the visible and invisible enemies.
There is nothing that prompts the devil to arm himself more against than the building of churches. As we know, there are many examples when with the erection of a church, the parish experienced deep turmoil.
One of these examples – the construction of the cathedral of Joy For All Who Sorrow in San Francisco at the beginning of the 60’s. It came to such a state that the members of the Parish Council began a legal process against the parishioners, and as a result the work on the church was stopped by court order.
Under such critical circumstances, Archbishop John Maximovich was hastily called from Europe and transferred to the see of San Francisco.
Because of the building of the cathedral, Saint John endured much suffering. He was accused of financial violations and summoned to appear in court. However, he was able to overcome this devil’s deception with his forbearance, meekness and prayers. Peace was re-established in the parish and the building of the cathedral finished.
When he was asked: who was guilty in this conflicting event? He answered with one word: “devil”.
We shouldn’t be afraid of anything, but be ready for various unforeseen difficulties.
It is meaningful that today we are celebrating simultaneously the day of Resurrection, and the memory of Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco. Spiritual strength comes from endurance and experience: that’s why the Saints receive grace to assist in those temptations and difficulties, which they have struggled themselves with during their lives. Having endured temptations themselves, they are able to help those who are tempted (Heb. 2:18). As an example: those Saints who overcame a tenacious struggle with the spirit of lust, can help those who are suffering from attacks of carnal lusts.
It’s a comfort to us that the beginning of the building of our church, coincided with the feast day of Saint John of Shanghai, who endured many sorrows for his church building.
May the Lord help us through the prayers of our holy fathers Theognios and John.
