Братья и сестры,
в сегодняшнем Евангелии мы имеем ответ на самый важный вопрос, важнее которого нет ничего.
«Что мне делать, чтобы наследовать жизнь вечную?» (Лк. 10:25).
А ответ на этот вопрос такой: «возлюби Господа Бога твоего всем сердцем твоим, и всею душею твоею, и всею крепостию твоею, и всем разумением твоим, и ближнего твоего, как самого себя» (Лк. 10:25).
Человек создан для того, чтобы любить Бога превыше всего. В этом цель нашего существования.
В круге нашей ежедневной жизни и наших занятий, есть только одно дело, которое необходимо должно совершаться всем сердцем, всей душой и всем разумом, – это молитва.
В самом деле, можно ли молится наполовину, т.е. произносить языком молитву, а думать о чем-либо другом? Конечно, это всегда с нами случается, но мы понимаем, что так не должно быть. Мы в это время не молимся, а отвлекаемся от молитвы. Или можно ли, например, молиться и в то же время, иметь в душе мысли сомнения или неверия, или гневаться на кого-либо? Опять же, это невозможно. Т.е. это не будет настоящей молитвой.
Таким образом, мы приходим к заключению, что любовь к Богу всем сердцем, и всею душею, и всею крепостию, и всем разумением – нигде так не может проявиться, как в молитве. Истинная молитва есть самое совершенное исполнение этой заповеди.
В Евангелии мы видим, что Господь Иисус Христос оставлял окружавшую Его толпу народа и удалялся в пустынные места для молитвы Богу. Таким образом, Он Своей жизнью на земле давал нам образ спасительной, богоугодной жизни.
Но есть тут и другая сторона: Господь Иисус Христос – Богочеловек. Он совершенный Бог и совершенный Человек; и как человек, Он нуждался в потребном для человеческой природы. Его тело нуждалось в пище и отдыхе, для укрепления своих сил, а Его душа нуждалась в молитве. Молитва – есть необходимая, естественная потребность души, как бы дыхание ее. По выражению св. прав. Иоанна Кронштадского, «молящийся дышит Св. Духом».
Без молитвы душа умирает.
Если употребить сравнение из повседневной жизни, молитва для души – это как зарядка для телефона. Для зарядки мы подключаем телефон к источнику электричества. Так и для души зарядка – это подключение к источнику жизни – Богу. Душа подключается к Богу через молитвенное сосредоточение на Нем своего внимания.
Внимание – это основа молитвы. Но невидимый разбойник рассеивает наше внимание и таким образом крадет у нас молитву, расхищает наше богатство. Он знает, как нам необходима молитва, как она спасительна, и потому всеми способами старается лишить нас ее.
Если в нашей жизни нет молитвы, она становится пустым провождением времени, без всякого плода. Молитва – это то, что дает смысл и содержание нашей жизни.
В Библии, в книге Исход, есть такое описание (Исход 17):
После исхода Израильтян из Египта на них напали Амаликитяне. Пророк Моисей послал Иисуса Навина сражаться с врагами, а сам взошел на гору и молился, воздевая руки. Пока руки Моисея были воздеты вверх, Израильтяне одолевали врагов, но когда от усталости его руки ослабевали и опускались, Амалик начинал побеждать. Тогда Аарон и Ор стали поддерживать руки Моисея, и враги обратились в бегство.
Св. Писание Ветхого Завета говорит языком символов. Здесь мы видим прообраз Креста Христова и также силу молитвы: не руки сражавшихся приобрели победу народу Божию, а руки воздетые в молитве.
«Если не Господь созиждет дом, всуе трудились строители» (Пс. 126:1), говорит псаломопевец. Конечно, в каждом деле необходимо прилагать труд и усилия, но успеха ожидать только от Бога, и достигать его молитвой.
Никакое дело, совершенное без молитвы, не может быть ни богоугодным, ни успешным. Так учит преп. Марк Подвижник: «Что сделаешь без молитвы и доброй надежды, то после бывает вредно и несовершенно.» Господь говорит в последней беседе с учениками: «ибо без Меня не можете делать ничего» (Ин. 15:5).
Таким образом, молитва – это основание, фундамент всякого дела. При постройке дома, кладется фундамент, и чем больше здание, тем крепче, прочнее должно быть основание. Так и прежде начала всякого дела необходимо положить твердое основание молитвы. Чем важнее это дело, тем усерднее и продолжительнее должна быть наша молитва о Божией помощи и успешном окончании этого дела.
«Просите, и дастся вам», говорит Господь. (Мф. 7:7)

Brothers and Sisters.
In today’s Gospel we have the answer to the most cardinal question – a question that is unmatched in importance by anything else.
“What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25).
The answer to this is thus: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with your entire mind, and your neighbour as yourself.” (Luke 10:27).
Man was created to love God above all else. This is the purpose for our existence.
In the cycle of our daily life and pursuits, there is only one undertaking that is essential to perform with all your heart, all your soul and your entire mind – it is prayer.
In reality, can one “half-pray”, i.e. articulate the prayer while thinking about something else? Certainly, this always happens with us although we understand this shouldn’t be so, because at that moment we are not praying but diverting away from it. For example, can we pray and at the same time have doubts or feelings of disbelief in our soul, or be angry at someone? Again, this is impossible i.e. it wouldn’t be a genuine prayer.
Thus, we can conclude that love toward God with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your strength, and your entire mind, cannot emerge anywhere except in prayer. A genuine prayer is the most complete execution of this commandment.
We see in the Gospel the Lord Jesus Christ leaving the surrounding mob of people and retreat to the mountain for prayer to God. In this way, His life on earth gave us an image of the salvific and God-pleasing life.
But there is another side. The Lord Jesus Christ is God-Man. He is a perfect God and perfect Man; and as a man, He was in need of necessities for human nature. His body was in need of food and rest for strengthening His powers, while His soul was in need of prayer. Prayer is an essential and natural necessity of the soul, just as its need for breathing. As Saint John of Kronstadt expressed: “a praying person breathes with the Holy Spirit.” Without prayer, the soul withers and dies.
As an example, if we apply a comparison from everyday life, prayer for the soul is akin to a charger for the telephone. In order to energize the phone, we plug it into its electrical source. Likewise, the charger for the soul is a link up to the source of life – God. The soul connects with God through an attentive prayerful concentration on Him.
Concentration – this is the basis of prayer. However, the unseen robber scatters our concentration and thus steals our prayer – plunders our riches. He comprehends the importance of prayer for us and how salvific it is, and that’s why he tries to deprive us of it through all types of techniques.
If prayer is absent in our lives, it becomes an empty waste of time – without any fruit. Prayer is what gives our life meaning and substance.
In the Bible, in the book of Exodus, there is the following description (Exod. 17):
After the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt, they were attacked by the Amalekites. Prophet Moses sent Joshua to do battle with the enemy while he went up to the top of the hill, and prayed with raised arms. While Moses’ arms remained raised, the Israelites prevailed over the enemy. However, when through fatigue his arms began to lower, the Amalekites started to win. Then, Aaron and Hur began to support Moses’ arms and the enemy was put to flight.
The Holy Scripture of the Old Testament speaks with symbols. Here we see the image of Christ’s Cross as well as the power of prayer: it wasn’t the arms of warriors that achieved victory for the people, but the arms raised in prayer.
The Psalmist declares: “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” (Psalm 127:1). Naturally, while every undertaking requires labour and energy, we should expect success only from God and reach it through prayer.
Any undertaking, performed without prayer, cannot be neither God pleasing or successful. This is how Saint Mark, the Ascetic, instructs: “Whatever you do without prayer and good faith, later, it happens to be detrimental and imperfect.” In the Lord’s last conversation with His Disciples, He says: “Without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
Thus, prayer is the basis, the foundation of all manner of undertaking. In building a house, a foundation is laid, and the bigger the structure, the stronger the bedrock must be.
Likewise, before commencement of any endeavour, it’s vital to put a strong foundation of prayer. The greater the importance of the project, the more intense and prolonged our prayer must be for God’s help for a successful conclusion of our endeavour.
“Ask, and it will be given to you.” (Mat. 7:7).
