О Положении Православного Христианина в Современном Мире.

Быть истинным православным христианином, готовым до смерти соблюсти свою верность Христу-Спасителю, в наши дни много труднее, чем в первые века христианства.
Тогдашние гонители обрекали на муку и смерть тела первых христиан. И христиане, укрепляемые благодатью Божиею, с радостью шли на муки и отдавали свою жизнь за Христа. и кровь мученическая «становилась семенем христианства».
Современный мир не угрожает так явно и открыто муками и смертью носителям Христова имени. Он даже сам еще продолжает называться «христианским», строит храмы, призывает Имя Христово, клянется на Священной Библии.
Но все это — одна видимость.
В действительности повсюду идет теперь сильнейшее скрытое гонение на христианство, проявляющееся в самых различных видах и формах. Это гонение опаснее и страшнее прежнего открытого гонения, ибо оно грозит духовной смертью. Сейчас происходит именно то, о чем завещал Христос-Спаситель: «Не бойтесь убивающих тело, душу же не могущих убить. Бойтесь более того, кто может и душу и тело погубить в геенне» (Матѳ. 10, 28).
Что же это происходит в мире и как может современный мир, столько столетий, повидимому, живший в христианстве, гнать христианство?
В мире, по словам св. Апостола Павла, «действует тайна беззакония» (2 Солун. 2, 7) — происходит процесс «Отступления» христиан от Христа, процесс, который в конечном итоге своем должен привести к открытию «Человека греха, сына погибели — антихриста» (2 Солун. 2, 3), и в подготовке царства Антихриста принимают самое деятельное участие как открыто отрекшиеся от Христа, так и продолжающие еще наружно носить имя «христиан».
Самым важным этапом «Отступления» явилась страшная кровавая русская революция, постигшая нашу несчастную Родину — Россию в 1917 году. С тех пор «Отступление» пошло вперед гигантскими шагами.
Страшныя потрясения пережила и доселе продолжает переживать наша Русская Православная Церковь. Но не столько были страшны те кровавыя гонения, которыя уподобили ее первенствующей Церкви, сколько внутреннее разложение, которое началось в ней, а с нею и во всей Православной Церкви после большевицкаго переворота.
Тлетворный дух соглашательства с богоборческой коммунистической властью, дух «Отступления» в недрах самой Православной Церкви, породил всевозможные разделения и расколы, как там на Родине, порабощенной безбожниками, так и здесь заграницей. Этот дух «Отступления», конечно, гораздо опаснее и губительнее для душ, нежели открытые гонения. Ведь это — внутренняя измена Христу-Спасителю при сохранении внешней лишь видимой верности Ему.
Дух «Отступления» с необыкновенным цинизмом и бесстыдством стал проявлять себя повсюду в мире во всех областях личной, семейной, общественкой и государственной жизни. Безнравственность, разврат и порнография не только не преследуются, а даже культивируются власть имущими, вплоть до систематического развращения молодого поколения в школах; почти исчезли прежния понятия о долге, чести и совести — на первое место ставятся грубая корысть и плотские наслаждения. Особенно горько за современную молодежь, которая совсем почти лишена духовнаго горения и того высокого энтузиазма жертвенного служения ближним и увлечения высокими нравственными идеями, коими отличалась прежняя молодежь. Целью жизни для многих стали лишь карьерныя стремления, хорошая служба, внешний комфорт и низменныя плотския наслаждения.
Все, что происходит теперь на верхах религиозной, государственной и общественной жизни людей, есть не что иное, как напряженная работа по подготовке слугами грядущаго Антихриста его будущаго царства.
Одним словом, мир, страшно сказать, – христианский мир – представляет собою ныне жуткую, безотрадную картину глубочайшего религиозно-нравственного падения.
И вот, как же мы должны прежде всего благодарить Бога за то, что существует еще у нас наша Русская Зарубежная Церковь!
Великое значение Русской Зарубежной Церкви заключается в том, что она одна только является в настоящее время законной Православной Церковью, не зависящей ни от каких антихристианских сил. Существование ея имеет для себя твердое каноническое обоснование в мудром указе Святейшаго Патриарха Тихона, изданном 7/20 ноября 1920 года за № 362.
Мы не можем, желая сохранить свою верность Христу-Спасителю, подчиняться той церковной власти, которая поставлена богоборцами и является послушным орудием осуществления их адских планов в мире. Не можем мы находиться в зависимости и от всякой другой церковной власти за пределами нашей порабощенной Родины, которая признает законным это порабощение и имеет молитвенное общение с иерархами советской церкви..
Современный христианин должен крепко держаться той Церкви, которая не запятнала своих риз каким-либо общением со слугами грядущего Антихриста. Это наша Русская Зарубежная Церковь, единственная законная преемница прежней дореволюционной Российской Церкви, проповедница высокой идеи Святой Руси. Весьма характерно, что к ней так тянутся все лучшие люди из других поместных православных церквей и даже из иноверцев.
А потому для нас несомненно, что эта Церковь должна и будет существовать до конца мира сего и второго пришествия Христова.
Но, конечно, одной формальной принадлежности к истинной Церкви еще недостаточно. Необходимо быть живым, а не мертвым членом Церкви. Для этого нужно с усердием исполнять все церковныя правила и всячески хранить наш исконный православный быт, не позволяя себе сливаться с окружающей иноверной средой, поддаваясь ея влиянию.
Прежде всего, необходимо каждому состоять членом какого-либо прихода Русской Зарубежной Церкви, сознавая себя членом общей церковно-приходской семьи.
Детей своих надо с самого раннего возраста обучать Закону Божию и русскому языку, воспитывая в них православное русское самосознание, беседуя с ними дома, и посылая их в церковно-приходския школы там, где они имеются, и стараясь оказывать всяческое содействие открытию таких школ там, где их нет. Надо тщательно беречь все наше молодое поколение от того духовного растления, которому всюду подвергается теперь молодежь. Совершенно недопустимо посещение представлений, на которых демонстрируются советские фильмы, всегда содержащие в себе элемент злостной пропаганды.
Сейчас время исповедничества — твердого стояния, даже до смерти, за свою Православную веру. Каждая уступка или компромисс в вопросах веры и церковных установлений ведет ко все большему и большему расшатыванию вековечных устоев Православия, постепенному отпадению от него и к переходу в лагерь слуг грядущаго Антихриста.
Надо бояться также обольщения земными благами. Крайне опасно поддаваться стремлениям сделать себе карьеру, создать славное имя, приобрести власть и влияние в обществе, стяжать богатства, окружить себя роскошью и комфортом Лучше жить скромно и даже в нужде и тесноте, но лишь бы сохранить свою свободу и независимость от кого бы то ни было, помня изречение св. Апостола: «Вы куплены дорогою ценою: не делайтесь рабами человеков» (1 Кор. 7, 23).
Страшнее всего в нынешней жизни даже не ожесточенное богоборчество, а полный религиозный индифферентизм, забвение Бога и равнодушие к вере и Церкви. Слуги Антихриста более всего стараются совершенно вытеснить Бога из жизни людей, дабы люди, довольные своим материальным благополучием, не вспоминали Бога, а жили так, как-будто Его вовсе нет. В постоянной суете и разсеянности духовная жизнь в человеке постепенно замирает.
Вот почему православный христианин должен всеми силами бороться за поддержание в себе духовной жизни, а главное средство для этого —ежедневная домашняя молитва и обязательное участие в общественной церковной молитве, не пропускать ни одного воскреснаго и праздничнаго богослужения в храме, не только литургию, но и всенощное бдение. С этой точки зрения, совершенно недопустимое явление, широко у нас, к сожалению, распространившееся — всякого рода развлечения как раз в кануны воскресных и праздничных дней. Это тоже несомненная уловка слуг грядущаго Антихриста для того, чтобы отвлечь православных христиан от неопустительного посещения церковных богослужений.
Для правильной духовной жизни губительнее всего распространенная в наше время привычка следовать во всем за так называемым «общественным мнением», которое разными способами создают все те же слуги грядущаго Антихриста, приобретая большую власть и умение действовать на умы и сердца современных людей.
Наконец, что самое важное, надо решительно оставить свойственную большинству современных людей плотскую греховную жизнь, легкомысленную и безпечную, и как можно чаще очищая свою душу искренним покаянием, всей душой стремиться к соединению со Христом в таинстве Причащения.
Дух постояннаго ожидания Второго Пришествия Христова это есть дух первохристианства, молитвенно взывавшаго ко Господу: «Ей, гряди, Господи Иисусе!» (Апок. 22, 20). А противоположный сему дух есть дух Антихриста, старающийся всячески отвлечь христиан от мысли о Втором Пришествии Христовом и последующем затем воздаянии. Поддающиеся сему духу подвергаются опасности — не узнать Антихриста, когда он придет, и попасть в его сети. Именно это и есть самое страшное в современном мире, исполненном всевозможных обольщений и соблазнов. Слуги Антихриста, как предупредил нас Господь, будут стараться «прельстить, если возможно, и избранных» (Матѳ. 24, 24).
Мысль об этом, однако, отнюдь не должна нас угнетать и подавлять, а наоборот — «восклонитеся», говорит об этом Сам Господь: «и поднимите головы ваши, потому что приближается избавление ваше» (Лук. 21, 28).
Сколь ни злы и страшны слуги грядущаго Антихриста, сколь ни страшен приход его самого, когда исполнятся назначенные для того сроки, но Господь наш сильнее их всех, и главное для нас — это до конца сохранить верность Господу, Который «убиет Антихриста духом уст Своих и упразднит явлением пришествия Своего» (2 Солун. 2, 8).
За верность Господу мы и должны бороться всеми своими силами, хотя бы нам пришлось и жизнь свою отдать за нее. Великая, ни с чем земным не сравнимая, награда ожидает нас за это. «Будь верен до смерти», говорит Сам Господь: «и дам тебе венец жизни» (Апокалипсис 2, 10).
Living as an Orthodox Christian in the Modern World.

In our times to be a true Orthodox Christian, and ready to maintain your faithfulness to Christ-Saviour unto death, is far more difficult than in the initial eras of Christianity.
Persecutors of those times condemned the Christians to torture and death; strengthened by God’s grace, the Christians went gladly toward suffering in giving their lives for Christ while their martyred blood “became the seed of Christianity.”
The contemporary world doesn’t threaten so openly with torture and death all those who carry the name “Christian.” Indeed, it continues to be called “Christian”: build churches, call upon Christ’s name and swear on the Holy Bible.
However, all this is a façade.
In reality, there is a hidden concerted persecution of Christianity far and wide, emerging in the most diverse appearances and applications. This persecution is more dangerous and more fearsome than the previous open oppression because it threatens spiritual death. What is happening today is what Christ-Saviour bequeathed: “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Mat. 10:28).
What is happening in this world; and how after so many centuries of ostensibly Christian living can the contemporary world persecute Christianity?
According to Apostle Paul, in the world: “the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.” (Thes. 2:7) – process of “falling away – apostasy” of Christians from Christ; a process that will end with the revelation of “the man of sin, son of perdition – antichrist” (2 Thes. 2:3), and the participants in the preparation of antichrist’s rule are not only those that reject Christ, but also those that continue to outwardly carry the name “Christian.”
The most important stage of this “falling away” was the horrific and bloody Russian Revolution that befell our unfortunate Motherland – Russia in 1917. From that point this “falling away” has gone forward with gigantic steps.
Our Russian Orthodox Church suffered a terrible convulsion, and to this day continues to suffer this temblor. But it wasn’t as much as the bloody persecutions – which can be likened to the first Church – as the inner decomposition which began in Her after the Bolshevik overthrow, and with Her, throughout the whole Orthodox Church.
The pestilent spirit of submission to the theomachist Communist authority – the spirit of “apostasy” in the viscera of the Orthodox Church Herself – spawned various divisions and schisms in the enslaved Motherland, as well as here in diaspora. This spirit of “apostasy” is certainly much more dangerous and ruinous for the soul than overt persecution. After all, this is an inner betrayal of our Christ-Saviour while maintaining a visibly outward fidelity to Him.
The spirit of “apostasy” has begun to manifest itself everywhere throughout the world with extraordinary cynicism and brazenness, in all spheres of life – personal, family, societal and governmental. Immorality, depravity and pornography are not only not being prosecuted, but are cultivated by those in power down to the systematic corruption of the young generation in schools; previous concepts of duty, honour and conscience have all but disappeared – replaced by crass vested interests and carnal indulgences. It is especially distressing over the contemporary youth, which is nearly deprived of a spiritual yearning and the elevated enthusiasm for selfless service to the neighbour; of devotion to high moral ideas, which distinguished the previous young generation. For many, the aim in life has become striving for career improvement, a good job, physical comfort and physical pleasures.
All that is happening now with the lives of people in the religious, governmental and societal top echelons, is none other than intensive effort by servants of the approaching antichrist in preparing his future kingdom.
In a word, earth, frightening to say this – Christian earth – presents itself as today’s horrific, gloomy picture of a profound religious-moral collapse.
Hence, before all else, how we must thank God for us to have our existing Russian Church Abroad!
The significance of the Russian Church Abroad is encompassed in that She is at this time the only one that is a lawful Orthodox Church, independent from any antichristian forces. Her existence has a firm canonical foundation in the wise “Ukaz” of Holy Patriarch Tikhon, issued on the 7/20 November 1920, No. 362.
In wanting to preserve our fidelity to Christ-Saviour, we cannot subordinate ourselves to that church authority that was installed by theomachists and appears as a weapon for realising their hellish plans in the world. We cannot be found to be dependent upon any other church authority that is outside the boundaries of our enslaved Motherland, and who recognises the legality of this enslavement; who has a prayerful communion with the hierarchs of the Soviet church.
The contemporary Christian has to hold tight to that Church whose vestments haven’t been sullied with any type of communion with the servants of the advancing antichrist. This Church is the Russian Church Abroad; the sole lawful successor of the former pre-revolutionary Russian Church, preacher of the high concept of Holy Russia. It’s very characteristic that all the best people from other local Orthodox churches are drawn to Her – even the heterodox.
That’s why for us, it’s doubtless that this Church must and will exist till the end of this world and Christ’s Second Coming.
Of course, the formal belonging to the True Church alone is insufficient. It’s essential to be a live and not a dead member of the Church. This requires us to sincerely fulfil all the Church rules and in all ways, preserve our native Orthodox entity, not allowing ourselves to merge with the surrounding heterodox society and subordinating ourselves to their influence.
Before anything else, it is imperative that everyone should be a member of a parish of the Russian Church Abroad, and acknowledge yourself as a member of the common church-parish family.
Your children should be taught the Word of God and the Russian language from an early age, nurturing in them an Orthodox Russian consciousness; conversing with them at home, and sending them to a church-parish school – if there is one, and attempt to give every assistance in the opening of such schools where none exist. We must meticulously preserve our young generation from that spiritual defilement, which today’s youth fall under everywhere. It’s completely impermissible to attend performances where Soviet films are shown, which always contain elements of malignant propaganda.
Now is the time to profess one’s faith – a firm stand for the Orthodox faith, even if it meant death. Every concession or compromise in questions of faith and Church rules, leads to a bigger and bigger destabilisation of centuries-old substructures of Orthodoxy; gradual “apostasy” from It and crossing over into the camp of forthcoming antichrist’s servants.
As well, one must be on guard against the allurement of earthly blessings. Also, extremely dangerous is the submission to a pursuit of a career; to create a good name; to acquire authority and influence in society; to accumulate wealth; to surround yourself with opulence and comfort. It’s better to live modestly and even in want and crammed surrounds just to preserve your freedom and independence from whoever, recalling the words of the Holy Apostle: “You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.” (1 Cor. 7:23).
The most frightening thing in this life is not the savage theomachy, but the complete indifference; the disregard of God and indifference toward faith and Church. Above all else, antichrist’s servants are attempting to completely oust God from people’s lives, so that being happy with their material abundance, they wouldn’t think of God and live as though He doesn’t exist. Being in constant hustle and bustle and absent-mindedness, the spiritual life within the person gradually dies.
That’s why an Orthodox Christian must battle with all his might to support within himself a spiritual life, and the cardinal means to do this is: daily prayers at home and obligatory participation in the communal church prayers, and not to miss any Sunday or Feast-day service in church – not only Liturgy, but also the All-night Vigil. In relation to this, the completely impermissible practice of different types of entertainment on the eve of Sundays and other Feast-days, has unfortunately been widely spread among us. This undoubtedly is an artifice of the servants of antichrist – to distract the Orthodox Christians from attending the obligatory Church Services.
In our times, the most ruinous thing for a correct spiritual life that has been widely proliferated is the habit of following the so-called “social opinion”, which was created by various methods by the servants of antichrist, who have acquired great power and skills to act on the minds and hearts of the contemporary human.
Finally, what is most important is to decisively forsake the corporeal sinful life that is natural to the majority of the contemporary people, who are indifferent and nonchalant, and cleanse one’s soul with sincere repentance as often as possible, striving with heart-felt resolve to unite with Christ through the Mystery of Holy Communion.
The spirit of early Christianity is the spirit of the constant expectation of Christ’s Second Coming, prayerfully appealing to the Lord: “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” (Rev. 22:20). Whereas the opposite spirit to this is the spirit of antichrist, endeavouring in every way to divert the Christian away from thoughts of Christ’s Second Coming and the ensuing requital. By submitting to this spirit, a person is exposed to a danger of not recognising antichrist when he comes and falling into his net. This is exactly the most frightening thing in our contemporary world, filled with allurements and temptations.
Just as our Lord warned us, antichrist’s servants will attempt to “deceive, if possible, even the elect.” (Mat.24:24).
However, thoughts on this should not depress and repress us, but quite the opposite – as our Lord Himself speaks of this: “Look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near,” (Luke 21:28).
Irrespective of how evil and frightening are antichrist’s servants; how terrifying his actual coming – when the appointed time arrives, our Lord is more powerful than all of them, and what’s central to us is to preserve our fidelity to the Lord to the end, Who: “will consume (the antichrist) with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming,” (2 Thes. 2:8).
We have to battle with all our might for our fidelity to the Lord, even though it meant giving up our lives for this. The reward that awaits us for this is great, which cannot be compared with anything on earth. As the Lord said: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Rev. 2:10).
