Сегодня, в третью неделю Поста, мы по древнему обычаю выносим для поклонения Крест Господень.
Крест выносится для поклонения три раза в году: в праздник Крестовоздвижения, в Неделю Крестопоклонную и также в начале Успенского поста, 1-го августа.
Причина выноса Креста 1-го августа объясняется так: «По причине болезней, часто бывавших в августе, с древности утвердился в Константинополе обычай выносить Честное Древо Креста на дороги и улицы для освящения мест и в отвращение болезней. И затем предлагали его народу для поклонения».
Таким образом Крест специально износился для предотвращения заразных болезней. Как же можем мы бояться, что от прикосновения ко Кресту мы получим болезнь!
Крест – это знамение победы над диаволом. По словам церковной песни «Подземные силы Креста страшатся знамени начертаема на воздусе». Если Крестная сила прогоняет диавола и полки демонов, то неужели она слабее каких-то маленьких вирусов?
С Крестом соединена непостижимая, непобедимая, божественная сила. Крест называется честным и животворящим. Если Крест животворит, т.е. производит жизнь, то как он может стать для кого-либо смертоносным или произвести вред и болезнь?
Подобный страх показывает недостаток веры. Но кто-нибудь может сказать: «Я верю в Бога, но я также знаю, что есть опасность заразиться, когда много людей прикасаются к одному предмету или принимают Причастие с одной лжицы.»
Здесь ошибка в том, что Бог представляется существующим как бы отдельно от мира. Таким образом, вирусы существуют сами по себе, независимо от Бога, живут и действуют по своим законам, на которые Бог не имеет прямого влияния. Такое представление чуждо Православному сознанию.
Бог – Творец и Промыслитель своего творения. Каждая мельчайшая частица материи, каждый атом и каждая молекула, содержатся в руке Божией. Вирусы живут и движутся не сами по себе, они движутся всемогущей силой Божией. Никакой вирус не может причинить нам никакого вреда, если на это нет повеления Божия.
Конечно, мы не должны искушать Бога, делая что-либо неразумное. На то и дан человеку разум, чтобы охранять свою жизнь и здоровье. Однако, ходить в храм, причащаться, целовать крест и иконы – это не безрассудное поведение, это не значит, искушать Бога. Напротив, избегать почитания святыни из-за страха заразы, – это значит, искушать Бога своим маловерием и навлекать на себя наказание Божие.
Те, кто боится прийти в церковь из-за страха заразиться вирусом, очевидно, считают церковь обыкновенным домом, как всякое другое здание. Но это не так. Церковь – это место особого присутствия Божия, это точка соприкосновения неба и земли, небо на земле.
Когда мы в церкви, – мы в руке Божией, мы в безопасности и нам нечего бояться. Когда овцы стоят в своем загоне им нечего боятся, а если овца выйдет из своего загона, она в опасности.
Из древности во время эпидемий люди собирались в храмах, совершали крестные ходы и особые моления о прекращении бедствия, каялись в своих грехах. В церкви ничего другого не можем мы получить, кроме духовной и телесной пользы.
Мы вступили в трудные времена. Господь послал нам испытание, экзамен, и оказалось, что мы плохо к нему подготовились. Апокалипсис уже у дверей. Нужно нам серьезно пересмотреть свою жизнь, пересмотреть свое отношение к Церкви, позаботиться о спасении своей души.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Today, on the third Sunday of Lent, according to ancient tradition, we bring out the Lord’s Cross for worship.
The Cross is brought out for worship three times a year: on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross; on Sunday of the Cross, and at the beginning of the Dormition Lent, the 1st of August.
The reason for bringing out the Cross on the 1st of August is explained thus: “Because of illnesses which often occurred in August, the practice of bringing out the Cross was established in ancient times in Constantinople, where it was the custom to bring out the Cross for blessing places and fending off illnesses. And then they offered it to the people for worship”.
It was in this way that the Cross was especially brought out for the warding off infectious diseases. Therefore, how can we be afraid that by coming into contact with the Cross, we will be infected!
The Cross is a sign of victory over the devil. By the words of Church hymn, “Underground powers fear the sign of the Cross inscribed in the air”. If the power of the Cross wards off the devil and legions of demons, how can it be possible that it is weaker than some tiny viruses?
The Cross is conjoined with an incomprehensible, invincible and Divine force. The Cross is called Precious and Life-giving. If the Cross does give life, then how can it become death-carrying or produce harm and sickness?
This type of fear shows lack of faith. However, some might say: “I believe in God: but I also know that there is a danger of infection when many people come into contact with one item, or accept Holy Communion from one spoon.”
The error here lies in that God is presented as though existing separately from the world. Consequently, the viruses exist autonomously and by themselves, independent of God: live and act according to their own laws over which God has no direct influence. This type of thinking is alien to Orthodox consciousness.
God is Creator and Providence of His creation. Every tiniest part of matter: every atom and molecule is held in God’s hand. Viruses live and move not of their own volition but are moved by the almighty power of God. No virus can inflict any harm if it’s not God’s will.
Naturally, we shouldn’t tempt God by doing something senseless, unreasonable. That’s why humans were given the power of reasoning, so as to preserve their lives and their health. However, going to church: taking Holy Communion: kissing the cross and icons – this is not senseless behaviour and doesn’t mean that you are tempting God. On the contrary, to avoid venerating holy objects through fear of a disease – this means you are tempting God with your lack of faith, which may incur God’s punishment.
Apparently, those who are afraid to come to church from fear of being infected by the virus, regard the church as an ordinary building. However, this is not so. The church is a special place of God’s presence: it is a point of contact of heaven and earth – heaven on earth.
When we are in church, we are in the hands of God, we are safe and shouldn’t fear anything. When the sheep stay in their paddock, there is nothing for them to fear: but if one leaves the paddock, she is in danger.
In ancient times, during epidemics, people used to gather in churches: performed church processions and special prayers for the cessation of the plague, and repented their sins. In church, we can receive nothing else other than spiritual and physical benefits.
We have entered difficult times. The Lord has sent us a trial, exam, and it turned out that we were badly unprepared for it. The Apocalypse is at the door. We need to seriously re-examine our lives: re-examine our attitude to the Church, and look to the salvation of our souls.
