25 лет со дня мученической кончины Брата Иосифа
Во имя Отца и Сына и Св. Духа.
Братья и сестры, недавно, по постановлению нашего Архиерейского собора, был начат процесс прославления во святых Брата Иосифа Муньоза, хранителя чудотворной Иверской-Монреальской Мироточивой иконы. В этом году исполняется 25 лет со дня его мученической кончины. В ночь на 31 октября 1997 г. Брат Иосиф был убит в Афинах, и икона бесследно исчезла.
Все чудесно в истории этой иконы. В 1982 году Иосиф путешествовал по Афону и там, в одном маленьком скиту увидел копию Иверской иконы Божией Матери, которая произвела на него такое впечатление, что он хотел приобрести эту икону во что бы то ни стало. Однако, игумен скита отказался продать эту икону. На утро Иосиф уже уходил из скита, когда игумен догнал его с иконой в руках. Он сказал Иосифу: «Пресвятая Дева хочет ехать с вами в Америку». По возвращении в Монреаль эта икона вскорости начала источать миро. И это чудо, не переставая, продолжалось в течение 15 лет.
Все эти 15 лет Брат Иосиф провел в непрерывной молитве перед Пресвятой Богородицей и в постоянных путешествиях с чудотворной иконой по приходам и монастырям РПЦЗ. Он посетил и Австралию, так что многие имели возможность молиться перед иконой и получить ватку смоченную чудесным миром.
Интересное совпадение: Брат Иосиф был назван в честь св. Иосифа Обручника, которому по промыслу Божию было дано служение беречь и заботится о Пресвятой деве Марии и Богомладенце. Так и праведный Брат Иосиф был и назывался хранителем Иконы Божией Матери. Есть сведение, что он был тайно пострижен на Афоне в монашество с именем Амвросий, в честь преп. Амвросия Оптинского.
Брат Иосиф был очень скромным и всегда старался оставаться в тени. Приезжая с иконой в какой-либо приход, он передавал ее местному духовенству, а сам стоял где-нибудь в дальнем углу храма. Пока Мироточивая икона была с нами, все внимание, естественно, было приковано к ней. Но после мученической кончины хранителя иконы Бр. Иосифа, все больше выступает значение его личности.
Божия Матерь избрала его для исключительного служения: в течение 15 лет жить в присутствии такого непостижимого чуда, в постоянной молитве предстоять и служить этому чуду. Содержанием его жизни стало служение Божией Матери, служение Церкви и людям. Бр. Иосиф уже не принадлежал самому себе и не мог больше распоряжаться своей жизнью. Несмотря на свои болезни и утомление от постоянных путешествий, Бр. Иосиф исполнял свое служение: нести Божие чудо к людям.
Плодом его труженической жизни стало редкое смирение, детская искренность и простота в общении с людьми. Его любовь к ближнему проявлялась в отзывчивости, готовности помочь каждому нуждающемуся в нем. Он к каждому относился как к своему другу.
По своей церковной позиции Бр. Иосиф не был фанатичным приверженцем какой-либо церковной группы. Будучи верным сыном РПЦЗ, он был открыт ко всем, но при этом твердо стоял за истину православного исповедания и чистоту нравов, отвращаясь лицемерия и неправды, где бы они ни проявлялись.
Мы часто называем чудом то, что в сущности не является чудом, а скорее, проявлением милости Божией, когда Господь по нашей молитве посылает нам Свою неожиданную помощь. Истинное чудо – это такое явление, которое происходит вопреки основным законам природы. Такие чудеса происходят очень редко. Таково было неперестающее истечение мира из иконы Божией Матери.
Чудом был не только сам факт, что миро вытекало из иконы. Но и само миро было чудесно. Например, у одного священника вата, которой он хотел собрать миро от иконы, вдруг, в его руках наполнилась миром, прежде чем он прикоснулся к иконе. Нечто противоположное случилось со священником в Лесненском монастыре. Когда брат Иосиф с иконой жил в монастыре, этот священник собирал понемногу миро в стеклянный сосуд. Наконец, когда он уже много собрал, он однажды обнаружил, что сосуд пустой. Собранное миро все исчезло из закупоренного сосуда. Видимо, Матери Божией не было угодно его намерение.
Благоухание от иконы также было чем-то необыкновенным, сверхъестественным. Если икона находилась в каком-либо месте, то благоухал воздух даже вдалеке от самой иконы.
Икона начала источать миро год спустя после прославления Новомучеников Российских (1981), и сам Брат Иосиф связывал это чудо с Новомучениками. Он говорил, что это чудо происходит не ради наших заслуг, а ради страданий сотен тысяч мучеников и исповедников в России.
Брат Иосиф глубоко чтил Новомучеников Российских, и Господь сподобил его самого окончить свой путь мученически. Он знал, что его жизнь в опасности; его пытались запугать. В своем последнем интервью, сказанном незадолго до смерти, он говорил: «Тот, кто будет верен в малом, тот будет верен в великом, когда потребуется. При возможности стать исповедниками, мы не должны это упустить. Потеряв земную жизнь, обретаем небесную. Мы не должны бояться смерти за Христа.»
Он был убит теми, кто хотел положить конец его служению Чуду Божией Матери. Почему его убили? – Потому что как искренний и честный человек он стоял на пути у тех, кто желал подчинить Церковь неправде.
Мы просим всех усилить молитвы о упокоении души Брата Иосифа, соединяя наши молитвы о нем с просьбой его предстательства о нас перед Божией Матерью, с просьбой чтобы ниспослано было благословение Божие на дело его церковного прославления.

25th anniversary of Brother Joseph’s martyrdom

Brothers and sisters,
Recently, by the decree of our Bishops’ Council, a process has begun to glorify among the saints Brother Joseph Munoz, the guardian of the miraculous Iveron-Montreal Myrrh-streaming Icon. This year marks the 25th anniversary of his martyr’s death. On the night of the 31st of October 1997, Brother Joseph was martyred in Athens, and the icon disappeared without a trace.
Everything about this Icon is miraculous. In 1982, Joseph travelled to Mount Athos and there, in one small skete, he saw a copy of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, which produced such an extraordinary impression on him that he wanted to obtain it come what may. However, the abbot of the skete refused to sell this icon. As Joseph was leaving the hermitage the following morning, the Abbot with the Icon in hand caught up with him. He said to Joseph: “The All-Blessed Virgin wants to travel with you to America”. Upon the return to Montreal, the Icon soon began to exude a fragrant myrrh. This miracle continued without ceasing for the next 15 years.
Brother Joseph spent all these 15 years praying continually before the Most Holy Mother of God and traveling constantly with the Miracle-working Icon to various parishes and monasteries of ROCA. He also visited Australia, so that many faithful had an opportunity to pray before the Icon, and receive a piece of cotton wool impregnated with the miraculous oil.
There is an interesting coincidence: Brother Joseph was named in honour of Joseph the Betrothed, who through God’s providence was charged to guard and take care of the Virgin Mary and God-Infant. Likewise, so was righteous Brother Joseph called guardian of the Icon of the Mother of God.
There is information that he was secretly tonsured a monk on Mount Athos with the name Ambrose, in honour of St. Ambrose of Optina.
Brother Joseph was very modest and humble, always attempting to remain in the shadows. In arriving at whatever parish with the Icon, he would hand it over to the local clergy and stand in some distant corner of the church. Naturally, while the Myrrh-Streaming Icon was with us, all our attention was fixed on it. But after the martyr’s death of its guardian Brother Joseph, the importance of his personality comes out more and more.
The Mother of God chose him for an exceptional ministry: to live for 15 years in the presence of such an incomprehensible Miracle, to stand before this miracle in constant prayer and minister to it.
The substance of his life became his service to the Mother of God, the Church and people. Br. Joseph no longer belonged to himself and could no longer manage his life. Despite his illnesses and fatigue from constant travel, Br. Joseph fulfilled his ministry: to bring God’s Miracle to the people.
The fruit of his life of labour became a rare humility, childlike innocence, and simplicity in communicating with people. His love for his neighbour appeared in openness, readiness to help everyone in their need. He treated everyone as his own friend.
Br. Joseph was not a fanatical adherent to some church group. Being a faithful son of ROCA, he was open to all, but at the same time he firmly stood for the truth of the Orthodox confession and moral purity, turning away from hypocrisy and untruth, wherever they appear.
We often call something a miracle which in essence is not a miracle, but rather a manifestation of God’s mercy, when the Lord sends us His unexpected help due to our prayers. A genuine miracle is a phenomenon that occurs contrary to nature’s fundamental laws. Such miracles occur rarely. Such was the unceasing flow of myrrh from the Icon of the Mother of God.
The miracle was not only in the flow of myrrh from the Icon – the myrrh itself was miraculous. As an example: one priest, who intended to collect the myrrh from the icon with a cotton wool, suddenly found, that the cotton wool in his hands was filled with the myrrh, before he even touched the icon.
Something quite the opposite occurred with a priest at the Lesna monastery. When brother Joseph stayed in the monastery with the Icon, this priest began to collect the myrrh in a glass jar. Finally, when he had the jar full, he one day found it empty – all the myrrh had disappeared from the sealed jar. Apparently, the Mother of God did not like his intention.
The fragrance from the icon was also something extraordinary, supernatural. If the Icon was situated in any place, the fragrance filled the air – even a long distance from the Icon itself.
The icon began to exude myrrh one year after the glorification of the New Martyrs of Russia (1981), and Brother Joseph himself tied this miracle with the New Martyrs. He used to say that this miracle was occurring not because of our own merits, but for the sake of the suffering of hundreds of thousands of martyrs and confessors in Russia.
Brother Joseph deeply revered the New Martyrs of Russia, and the Lord found him worthy to end his journey as a martyr. He knew his life was in danger; attempts were made to frighten him. In his last interview, shortly before his death, he said: “He that is faithful in the least is faithful also in much, when it is required. If we are called to be confessors, we cannot turn away from it. Having lost our life on earth, we acquire life in heavenly. We must not fear losing our life for Christ.”
He was killed by those who wanted to put an end to his ministry to the Miracle of the Mother of God. Why was he killed? – Because, as a sincere and honest person, he stood in the way of those that wanted to submit the Church to falsehood.
Let us all now increase our prayers for the repose of Brother Joseph’s soul, joining our prayers for him with a request of his intercession for us before the Mother of God, with a request for God’s blessing to be sent regarding his glorification by the Church.
