Во имя Отца и Сына и Св. Духа.
Братья и сестры, слово «Евангелие» в переводе означает «добрая весть». Действительно, что может быть удивительнее и радостнее известия, которое Апостолы были посланы сообщить всему миру: Бог, создавший нас, по любви к нам стал Человеком, был распят за нас, чтобы избавить нас от наших грехов и дать нам вечную блаженную жизнь.
Представьте себе нищего и голодного, бездомного человека. И вдруг он узнал, что выиграл лотерейный билет, и теперь он богач. Какая радость его охватит! Но все земные радости ничто, по сравнению с тем, что Господь уготовал нам в Своем Царстве!
«Не видел того глаз, не слышало ухо, и не приходило то на сердце человеку, что приготовил Бог любящим Его» (1Кор. 2:9-10).
Эта радость изображена в Евангельской притче о человеке, нашедшем сокровище. «Царство Небесное подобно сокровищу, скрытому на поле, которое, нашедши, человек утаил, и от радости о нём идёт и продаёт всё, что имеет, и покупает поле то» (Мф.13: 44).
Но заметьте, чтобы купить это поле, на котором было скрыто сокровище, ему было необходимо продать все, что он имел. Иначе у него не хватило бы денег на покупку этого поля. Это значит, что христианин должен быть готов отказаться от всего земного ради будущей вечной жизни.
Ради надежды получить вечную, блаженную жизнь мученики шли на страдания и смерть, преподобные отцы терпели многолетние подвиги.
Наша жизнь по большей части состоит из однообразных, повторяющихся действий, и это неизбежно. Но над этой рутиной должна быть какая-то высшая цель, которая оживляет, дает энергию жить и трудиться. Без такой высшей цели ежедневная жизнь становится бессмысленной суетой, замкнутым кругом, беличьем колесом, которое производит депрессию и желание разорвать этот замкнутый круг.
Когда человек находит эту высшую цель в вере во Христа, в надежде на будущую бессмертную жизнь, тогда даже самые простые и повторяющиеся ежедневные дела приобретают другой смысл, становятся служением Богу.
Что характерно для нашего бездуховного времени, это отсутствие такой высшей жизненной цели. Какие цели ставят себе молодые люди? Получить образование, найти хорошую работу, завести семью. Все это прекрасно, но все это земное, а мы созданы для вечности.
Молодой человек смотрит в будущее, где впереди у него долгие годы, полные интересных впечатлений. Но когда мы посмотрим назад, то видим, что от прошлых лет с нами остаются только смутные воспоминания, как сон. И мы начинаем понимать, что так же точно пройдут и будущие годы. Земная жизнь пройдет, как сон. Но вечная жизнь – не сон, и от этой краткой земной жизни будет зависеть наша вечная участь.
Почему нашей молодежи не интересно в церкви, церковная жизнь их не привлекает? Церковная жизнь следует по строго определенному порядку, это однообразие может отталкивать молодежь. Они говорят: в церкви всегда одно и то же. Но в действительности, жизнь в церкви всегда богатая, насыщенная, вдохновляющая. Живое общение с Богом – это то, что дает внутреннее содержание церковной жизни.
В церкви становится скучно, оттого, что нет внутренней потребности общения с Богом, которую производит живая вера, нет веры в будущую вечную жизнь.
В течение столетий вера от одного поколения переходила к другому. Вера родителей, как самое драгоценное наследство, передавалась детям. Св. Ап. Павел пишет своему ученику Тимофею, хваля его веру, которую он воспринял от своей матери и бабушки:
«Вспоминаю о тебе в молитвах моих днем и ночью… приводя на память нелицемерную веру твою, которая прежде обитала в бабке твоей Лоиде и матери твоей Евнике; уверен, что она и в тебе» (2 Тим. 1, 3–5).
Но в наше время эта преемственность нарушилась. Во многих семьях дети не следуют примеру своих родителей и оставляют Церковь. Почему так происходит? Почему у нас не всегда получается передать веру нашим детям?
Понятно, что для этого есть много различных причин. Но для нас полезно было бы обратиться на себя самих и задать себе вопрос: не оттого ли, что наша вера слишком слаба? Ее едва хватает нам самим, но уже недостаточно, чтобы передать другим.
Если рассмотреть житие какого-либо святого, то мы увидим, что, как правило, в его жизни произошла встреча со святым человеком. Т. е. от огня святости одного был зажжен новый огонь святости. Например, в жизнеописании св. мученика Иосифа, которого мы прославили в прошлом году, мы видим, что он, когда был еще отроком, встретил на своем жизненном пути Владыку Леонтия Чилийского, архиерея праведной жизни, и эта встреча определила его дальнейший путь.
Христианство – это не теория, а жизнь во Христе, поэтому нужно, чтобы были живые примеры такой жизни. Мы должны жить верой во Христа, иначе наша церковная жизнь станет рутиной, которая не может привлечь молодежь.
Жить верой во Христа значит: иметь страх Божий, жить в Его постоянном присутствии, держать себя в благоговении перед Ним. Это великий и спасительный подвиг. Св. Писание, говоря о праведном Енохе, который за свою праведность был взят живым на небо, указывает на это делание, как на источник его святости.
«И ходил Енох пред Богом; и не стало его, потому что Бог взял его». (Быт. 5:24).
Будем всегда стараться, как Енох, «ходить пред Богом», чтобы наследовать ту радость, которую Бог приготовил любящим Его. Аминь.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Brothers and sisters, the word ‘Gospel’ means “good news” in translation. The Apostles were sent to proclaim the good news to the whole world: God, our Creator, out of love for us, became Man, was crucified for our sake, in order to save us from our sins and give us eternal blessed life. What could be more amazing and joyful than the news that the Gospel proclaims?
Imagine a poor, hungry, homeless person. And suddenly he finds out that he has won a lottery ticket, and now he is rich. What joy will overwhelm him! But all earthly joys are nothing compared to what the Lord has prepared for us in His Kingdom!
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor. 2:9-10).
This joy is depicted in the Gospel parable about the man who found treasure. “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field” (Matthew 13: 44).
But note, that in order to buy this field where the treasure was hidden, he had to sell everything he had. Otherwise, he couldn’t buy this field; there would not be enough money to buy it. This means that a Christian must be ready to renounce all earthly things for the sake of the future eternal life.
For the sake of the hope of receiving eternal, blessed life, martyrs suffered torments and death, the holy fathers endured many years of ascetic life.
Our life mostly consists of monotonous, repetitive actions, and this is inevitable. But above this routine there must be some higher purpose that gives inspiration and energy to live and work. Without such a higher purpose, everyday life becomes a meaningless hustle and bustle, a hamster wheel, which produces depression and a desire to break this vicious circle.
When a person finds this highest purpose in faith in Christ, in the hope of a future immortal life, then even the simplest and most repetitive actions obtain a different meaning and turn into service to God.
What is typical for our materialistic times is the absence of such higher life goals. What goals do young people set for themselves? Get an education, find a good job, start a family… All this is wonderful, but all this is earthly, and we are created for eternity.
A young man looks to the future, where he has many years of life, full of interesting impressions. But when we look back, we see that only vague memories from the past years, remain with us, like a dream.
And we begin to understand that the future years will pass in the same way. Earthly life will pass like a dream. But eternal life is not a dream, and our eternal destiny will depend on this short earthly life.
Why are our young people not interested in church? Why does church life not attract them? Church life follows a strictly defined order, and it is inevitably a routine. This can turn away young people. They say: it’s always the same thing in church. But in reality, life in the church is always rich, fruitful and inspiring. Living communion with God is what gives the inner content to church life.
It becomes boring in church, because there is no inner need for communion with God, which is produced by living faith.
Over the centuries, faith has been passed on from one generation to another. The faith of parents, as the most precious inheritance, was passed on to children. Holy Apostle Paul writes to his disciple Timothy, praising his faith, which he inherited from his mother and grandmother:
“I remember you in my prayers day and night… calling to mind your sincere faith, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice; and I am convinced that it is in you also” (2 Tim. 1:3-5).
But in our time this continuity has been broken. In many families, children do not follow the example of their parents and leave the Church. Why does this happen? Why are we not always able to pass on faith to our children?
Of course, there are many different reasons for this. But it is good for us to turn to ourselves and ask ourselves: is it because our faith is too weak? It is barely enough for us, but not enough to pass on to others.
If we examine the life of any saint, we will find that, as a rule, in his life there was an encounter with a holy person. From the fire of holiness of one person, a new fire of holiness was ignited. For example, in the life of the Holy Martyr Joseph, whom we glorified last year, we see that when he was still a boy, he met Vladyka Leontiy of Chile, a bishop of pious life, and this meeting determined his future path.
Christianity is not a theory, but a life in Christ. We must live by faith in Christ, otherwise our church life will become a routine that cannot attract young people.
To live by faith in Christ means: to have the fear of God, to live in His constant presence, to keep oneself in reverence for Him. This is a great and saving feat. The Holy Scripture, speaking of righteous Enoch, who for his righteousness was taken alive to heaven, points to this feat as the source of his holiness. “And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” (Gen. 5:24)
Let us always try, like Enoch, to “walk with God,” in order to inherit the joy that God has prepared for those who love Him. Amen.
